Le Vian is doubling down on its commitment to Montana sapphires with an Ombré collection featuring the stones as well as its first-ever documentary, showing the journey Montana sapphires take from mining to finished jewelry.
The 15-minute documentary, The Story of the Montana Sapphire: America’s Rare Treasure, stars gem explorer Yianni Melas, who’s been called a “modern-day Indiana Jones of gems.” Since it was posted on Le Vian’s YouTube channel in November, the short film has been already been viewed more than 9,000 times.
Steven LeVian, who appears in the doc, says Montana sapphires were one of the first collections he worked on when he joined the family business about a year ago. He traveled to Montana last summer, then visited the cutting factory overseas in December—and experiencing the Montana sapphire’s journey from the ground up made him fall in love with the stone and its jewelry, he says.

“This was the first time I ever visited any mine. I learned a tremendous amount about the mining process, and seeing everything firsthand gave me a completely new appreciation for what goes into each stone and piece,” says Steven. “Now that we’re working with American sapphires, it feels even closer to home and adds a deeper level of meaning to me for the pieces we create.”
In the documentary, LeVian and Melas go to the Helena area in Montana, where sapphires were discovered in the 1800s by people searching for gold. The duo visit the Rock Creek and Yogo Gulch deposits, learn how miners collect the sapphires sustainably, and explore how the gemstones go from raw to finished.
Featuring soaring vistas of Big Sky Country, the film tells the stories of the family mines, the people who work there, and their regard for the gemstones they collect. It’s a unique way to market a jewelry collection and an example of Le Vian’s difference as a jewelry company, CEO Eddie LeVian tells JCK.
“Since millions of dollars of the unruly colors of the Montana sapphires have in the last century been sold to Switzerland for the sapphire crystals in the Swiss watch movements and now Le Vian was revolutionizing these beautiful gems, we felt that we should use our cinematic skills to educate Americans in the nature and history of the Montana sapphire mines,” says Eddie.
The stones further deserved cinematic treatment, he says, because their hues—from golden dawn to prairie green to glacier blue—are so vibrant. LeVian notes that his family also wanted to highlight the ethics and sustainability practices in the brand’s supply chain (the company is a member of the Responsible Jewellery Council).

Montana sapphires are truly an American treasure, according to the CEO. “Le Vian’s trend forecast started with the sentiment of patriotism that got translated into Americana jewelry. In turn, that led us to look for American gems. While we have had a half-century experience with American turquoise, we were fascinated to look into the American sapphires from Montana,” he says.
For the new collection, Le Vian used its trademarked Ombré color mapping technique on Montana sapphires, which were sorted into seven distinct shades. Those shades are arranged in jewelry pieces to mirror the colors of Montana’s skies, rivers, and terrain.
“Having achieved a patented mapping method for the Chocolate Ombré diamonds and the Denim Ombré sapphires gave us the perfect plan to tame these beautiful rustic colors of blues and greens and some yellows into the next big thing,” Eddie says. “As such, we are investing millions of dollars a month in extracting rough from the mine and cutting them and mapping them into beautiful patterns.”
Styles in the Montana Sapphire Ombré collection, available through Kay Jewelers and other authorized retailers, start at $999 and include tennis necklaces, rings, bracelets, and hoop, stud, and drop earrings. But don’t ask Eddie LeVian which one is his favorite—he won’t say.
“I love every piece. They are like my children and grandchildren—each one more beautiful and more unique than the next,” he says. “We are blessed to have a united family and a passion for the fine jewelry and gem industry, and I’m seeing us making a dramatic impact in unlocking the value of what we believe are the most beautiful sapphires in the world.”
