Consumers are increasingly favoring classic engagement ring styles and taking a more deliberate approach to shopping, according to a new survey from Jewelers Mutual.
The insurer’s survey of 2,000 recently engaged or married adults, released Oct. 13, found that design and uniqueness remain the top considerations when selecting a ring, ranking well ahead of price, stone size, and brand.
The findings point to growing interest in timeless looks. Solitaire settings now account for 37% of engagement rings, up from 22% in 2024, while white gold remains the most popular metal, chosen by 43% of respondents, up from 35% two years ago. Preference for platinum has also increased, according to the study.
Shoppers also appear to be doing more homework before making a purchase. Among respondents who researched rings before receiving one, 38% said they started at least three months in advance, compared with 13% in 2024.
Friends and family were cited as more influential on ring style than either social media or celebrities, suggesting consumers continue to place greater trust in personal recommendations than online trends.
The survey found that engagement ring buying is often becoming more collaborative. While surprise proposals remain common, 22% of purchasers said the final ring decision was made jointly.
The research also revealed a notable generational divide in ring-wearing habits. Overall, 61% of respondents said both partners wear an engagement ring. But only 43% of couples ages 18 to 24 reported mutual ring-wearing, compared with more than 80% of couples ages 55 to 64.
Once purchased, engagement rings tend to be worn regularly. Half of respondents said they wear their ring every day and another 35% wear it several times a week. Most wear their rings to work, at social events, while running errands, and at home, while 90% travel with them, according to the study.
The study was conducted in May 2026 among U.S. adults who purchased or received an engagement ring within the previous five years and were either engaged or had married during that period.
