Christie’s Watch Sale Features Warhol’s Patek and a ‘Gone With the Wind’ Tank

From a once-in-a-generation Patek Philippe, to a timepiece previously owned by Andy Warhol, to a Cartier Tank commemorating a Hollywood classic, provenance stands out in Christie’s Important Watches sale on June 12 in New York City.

The top lot—with a presale estimate of $800,000 to $1,600,000—is a Patek Philippe ref. 3448G “red dot” perpetual calendar, offered with two cases and an elegant white gold bracelet strap. “Red dot” refers to the leap year indication, a complication so rarely produced that this particular watch (dating to 1981) was just the fourth Patek Philippe ever made with it and is one of only two known transitional 3448s to feature it.

Warhol’s Patek Philippe Calatrava ref. 570, manufactured in the mid 50s, will make its first market appearance since Sotheby’s landmark 1988 sale from the artist’s estate, estimated at $200,000–$400,000.

Another watch with a pop culture connection is a 1939 Cartier Tank Normale that was a gift to producer David O. Selznick for the premiere of Gone With the Wind. Selznick received the watch (estimate $6,000–$9,000) from businessman John Hay “Jock” Whitney, who financed production of the 1939 film. It is inscribed “David   Xmas 1939   Praise de Lawd   Jock.”

In conjunction with America’s 250th anniversary, Christie’s is presenting two Patek Philippe Calatravas commissioned by President Lyndon B. Johnson through Tiffany & Co., estimated at $70,000–$140,000 and $70,000–$120,000. Each bears the words “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (aka the golden rule) in a circle on the face.

Additional highlights of Friday’s sale include a Richard Mille RM022 “Red” Aerodyne Dual Time Zone ($500,000–$1,000,000), a Rolex Daytona Paul Newman ref. 6241 ($200,000–$400,000), and a 1970 Cartier London Baignoire Allongée ($100,000–$200,000).
