Bonhams To Auction George and Charlotte Shultz’s Personal Trove of Jewels

Share

There aren’t many people in the world who can claim they’ve rubbed elbows with world leaders such as Queen Elizabeth II and Pope John Paul II, but George and Charlotte Shultz were among the lucky few. But politics and practices aside (Shultz was the former secretary of state under President Ronald Reagan and also held four various cabinet roles under three different presidents), one thing that defined these moments were the jewels Mrs. Shultz donned. On May 23, the couple’s personal collection will become available (open for bidding now) in a dedicated sale, Style and Substance: The Collection of George and Charlotte Shultz, at Bonhams New York, which includes over 200 jewels, with more than 70 of which are by Tiffany & Co.

“George and Charlotte Shultz had an incredible love story that was celebrated in the fabulous jewelry they bought together,” Emily Waterfall, director of jewelry for Bonhams Los Angeles, tells JCK. “She had an extraordinary jewelry box, but two necklaces are absolute showstoppers: the Hedges and Rows and the Scarf necklaces from Tiffany & Co. [shown below] are two of the most sought-after and wearable designs by one of the most important jewelry designers of the last century: Jean Schlumberger. He was known for his glorious masterpieces for Tiffany, capturing the wonder of nature in vibrant gemstones. His dreamy and playful designs have been worn by the most stylish women in the world, from the Duchess of Windsor to Elizabeth Taylor and from Jackie Kennedy to Charlotte Shultz. Bonhams is thrilled to be presenting this extraordinary collection.”
