All Hands on Deck

Share

At a moment when consumers are especially drawn to pieces with meaning, the hand is emerging as a particularly resonant symbol in jewelry.

Everyone was talking about hands after the annual Met Gala in May, where the theme, “Fashion Is Art,” explored the body as a canvas for storytelling. Given that hands are one of the body’s great tools of expression, it’s no surprise they became a focal point of the evening (see Vogue’s hands-y coverage of the standout looks).

Fast-forward a few weeks to Jewelry Week in Las Vegas, and there they were again: sign-language hands; the hamsa; hands making a peace sign or giving a middle finger; an open palm. And here I thought we must be uncovering some sort of niche trend, but no—hands have always been here.

Hands are an incredibly loaded symbol. They can signify protection, power and authority, prayer and spirituality, communication, identity, individuality, and more. In a jewelry market increasingly packed with narrative pieces—presumably in response to consumer demand—the hand is perhaps one of the most versatile vehicles for storytelling.

Hands are so ubiquitous in jewelry that I published a story about them back in 2021. But with the current zeitgeist calling for individualized, expressive jewels, they feel all the more relevant in 2026—especially since designers keep finding ways to make them feel fresh, fierce, and utterly collectible. Here, some of the latest examples.
