paul w. nordt jr., known to many as “grandpa nordt,” and “the chief,” died on jan. 18, 2004. he resided with his wife, lois, in roanoke, va., and would have celebrated his 90th birthday next month. nordt was born in newark, n.j., on feb. 28, 1914, and he and his three brothers grew up in the neighboring town of east orange.
