Jose Hess Design has revived its 1980 hockey tribute pin to honor the gold-medal performances by the U.S. women’s and men’s teams at this year’s Winter Olympics.
While the silhouette remains consistent with the original design, the new pin is made of gold-plated silver, for a more accessible price point. The late Jose Hess created the original—in 1980, the year of the Olympic “Miracle on Ice”—in 14k gold.
The golden hockey-stick pin hits the market at a time of renewed popularity for brooches and of hockey in the cultural zeitgeist, thanks to the United States’ double gold at the Milan Cortina Games and the hit HBO series Heated Rivalry.
Hess’ original pin was presented to the U.S. men’s hockey team during a 1980 press event in New York City, an early example of jewelry design intersecting with sports culture.
“Jose always believed jewelry should commemorate meaningful moments,” said Magdalena “Maggie” Hess, president of Jose Hess Design (and Jose’s widow), in a statement. “This design celebrates the accomplishments of both U.S. hockey teams while honoring a tradition that began decades ago.”
With the look, color-wise, of an Olympic gold medal, Jose Hess Design’s 2.75-inch hockey pin has three diamonds in a row at the top. It is available now for both retail purchase and wholesale orders.
