Assuming everything goes according to plan, at 9:59 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, Sara McDonough will be standing in the Miami Beach Convention Center with a beatific smile across her lips, ready to welcome attendees to the fall edition of JIS, the Miami beach show, founded in 1979, that has grown into one of the industry’s key sourcing opportunities.
“It’s my favorite moment of JIS,” McDonough, the event director, tells JCK. “The show floor is semi-quiet. The door opens and we can see and feel the excitement on customers’ faces. I just love it when everything we’ve worked on for the last six months shines and comes to life.”

This year, that includes events, experiences, and activations—from gift-wrapping and bow-tying demonstrations to trend talks tailored for holiday shoppers—that dovetail around a new theme, “Spark Holiday Success.” The show will feature more than 600 exhibitors all focused on helping retailers replenish their inventory just in time for the fourth-quarter crunch.
“We want to excite the customer, the retailer, to go back to their store so they can replicate and draw customers into their stores,” McDonough says. “The identity of the show is so centered around restocking for key times and with the fall show’s holiday timing, we wanted to create a fun theme to help the show stand out.”
To that end, the show team has enhanced the new Brands pavilion. “We featured it at JIS Spring and have relocated and renovated the area so it’s more centrally located,” McDonough says. “I would describe it as a discovery zone. It gives retailers the chance to meet new talent, see fresh collections, and, hopefully, find a bestseller before everybody else does.”

Home to about 15 fashion-forward brands with robust social media followings—including Crislu, Henia Danielle, and Van Den Abeele—the pavilion is the perfect spot to shop for younger clients.
“We’re really trying to focus on the Gen Zer,” McDonough says. “They don’t have a ton of money but they want to be on the forefront of fashion. That’s where we came up with that idea.”
Elsewhere on the show floor, a fresh batch of 30-minute On Trend Talks will bring current industry conversations directly to the show floor in the Trends Lounge. On Friday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m., Jen Cullen Williams will moderate “Beyond Metal: What’s New in Alternative Materials” with JCK magazine editor-in-chief Victoria Gomelsky; on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m., Williams and Gomelsky will return for “What’s Trending in Design,” exploring the factors shaping the jewelry designs poised to resonate with holiday shoppers.

The series will conclude Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m. with “Ready for the Rush: Holiday Retail Trends Straight Off the JIS Floor,” featuring Williams and consultant Tammy Lail in a discussion that centers on preparing for the holiday season.
“I love our On Trends talks,” McDonough says. “They give our customers a 30-minute break while on the show floor to learn to soak in what’s going on in the industry, to learn about trends. Especially if they’re in the Caribbean, they get a peek at what’s going on in the U.S.”
Beyond events and experiences, the show is also promoting a cohort of new exhibitors, including Jewels by Anu, Previato Corp., Sky Wing, Athra, and AAB Style.
“Not only do we have signage on the new exhibitor booths that say ‘new exhibitor,’ we also are featuring them at our welcome reception on Friday evening,” McDonough says. “And that’s a big deal for the new exhibitors to meet the retailers off the show floor in a casual setting.”
