Jewelry Incorporating Textiles–Part 4: Rope & Cord

Another textile component that is popular in this season’s jewelry is rope or cord. Simple lengths of rope or cord are utilized in varied styles that have been featured in fashion editorials and advertisements.

The February 2013 issue of Elle highlights a bracelet of rope and enamel from Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer. Also pictured is a rose gold twin ring from Repossi. The model at left wears a brass pendant necklace and a brass ring set from Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquière with an embroidered silk and mohair ensemble by that designer. (The ring set is a favorite of fashion editors, as I will discuss in an upcoming blog post.) She also wears a rubber, enamel, and pearl bracelet from Delfina Delettrez.

The February issue of InStyle spotlights a cord, magnet, cotton, and brass bracelet from Holst + Lee.

In this sporty look from the March issue of Lucky, the model wears a necklace of rope and rhodium from Berry along with colorful bangles from Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer. The model also wears a Lacoste sweater, Emmanuelle bra top, DKNY skirt, and cap, and Vince Select sandals. She carries a bag from Meredith Wendell.

February’s Lucky features a necklace of two colors of knotted rope from Sequin on the model pictured above right. She also wears a resin bracelet from R.J. Graziano, plus a Kate Spade New York sweater, Joe’s denim shorts, and Anniel shoes. The model to the left wears drop clip earrings from Alexis Bittar and enamel bangles from R.J. Graziano, along with a Gap sweater, MiH Jeans pants, and AGL oxfords.

Designer Tommy Hilfiger includes necklaces and bracelets of what appears to be cord in a number of his current advertisements, including the one pictured above, although it does not look like the items are available for sale. Presumably they are exactly what they appear to be: simple lengths of knotted cord worn as jewelry.

Lawyer and art collective founder Felicia Gordon is profiled in the February issue of Elle magazine. In the photo above right, she wears a braided rope and brass chain necklace from Holst + Lee. In the photo bottom right, she wears a cylinder chain necklace from Tuleste layered with a double chain necklace from Kenneth Jay Lane. (Layered necklaces is another trend this season.)

Accessories Director Leah Karp chooses braided waxed-nylon rope bracelets accented with sterling silver or gold plate from Scosha as part of her shopping budget in April’s InStyle.

The November 2012 issue of People StyleWatch features a woven rope bracelet with gold plate detail from Gorjana along with a woven leather and brass cuff from Kris Nations.

The October 2012 issue of Redbook features a design of braided cotton nautical cord from Kiel James Patrick. Also pictured is a pair of rings from LuLus.com.

More on braided and woven textiles in jewelry designs will follow.
