Jewelry Incorporating Textiles Part 3: Wrapped Fabric & Thread

One of the techniques seen in this season’s jewelry that incorporates textiles is wrapping fabric or thread around metal, wood, or other base material to create colorful effects.

The April 2013 issue of People Style Watch presents a page of global designs, noting that “beads, tassels and other crafty touches give these colorful pieces a one-of-a-kind feel.” Wrapped textiles appear in the Berry bracelet, top center, made of acrylic with thread and cord detail; and the Mercedes Salazar gold-plated bronze bangles with polyester detail, bottom. Also pictured are metal and stone earrings from Catherine Stein Designs; a cuff of cotton with bead and crystal detail from Deepa Gurnani; a necklace of glass beads with antiqued gold thread and tassel detail from Sachin + Babi; crystal earrings with leather backing from Suzanna Dai; a necklace described as metal and opal with tassels from Yochi (although “opal” apparently refers to the color); and “hydro quartz” beaded earrings from Miguel Ases.

The April 2013 issue of Real Simple features a stack of bangle bracelets of silk thread and gold plate from R.J. Graziano, worn with a Madewell floral dress and Banana Republic cardigan.

Rows of thread-covered chains plus painted beads and bright tassels with gold plated metal comprise an elaborate necklace from Akong pictured in the March 2013 issue of Marie Claire. Also pictured is a sterling silver horse bracelet from Hermès.

The February 2013 issue of Harper’s Bazaar spotlights a pair of brightly colored batik fabric-wrapped bangle bracelets from Lulu Frost.

A bracelet of wrapped multicolored threads with nylon and cotton knot detail and tagua nut beads from Sequence, created in El Salvador, is pictured at left in this beach-themed fashion spread from the February 2013 issue of InStyle. Pictured at right is a necklace of glass beads and natural shell from Roberta Freymann and a cuff of stabilized turquoise, leather, and brass from AV Max.

The March 2013 issue of People Style Watch features a pendant necklace of wrapped thread and recycled brass from A Peace Treaty for Voguevert. Also pictured is a bracelet of woven chains, including thin chains taken from vintage necklaces, by Dirty Librarian Chains.

Goldtone hoops threaded with polyester ribbon and chain from Sophie Theallet for The Limited appear in the April 2013 issue of People Style Watch. A metal mesh cuff from The Limited is also pictured.

Lightweight silk hand-knotted around wooden beads comprises the Bindu necklaces from Eileen Fisher pictured in the March 2013 issue of Real Simple, which can be wrapped around the wrist and worn as bracelets. Also pictured is an antiqued goldtone metal necklace from Gemma Simone.
