Jewelry Incorporating Textiles Part 2: Raffia

Raffia has burst onto the fashion scene this season thanks in large part to the sustained marketing efforts of the design house Dolce & Gabbana. Raffia is a fiber obtained from the leaves of the raffia palm tree, used in tropical climes to make baskets, hats, purses, mats, and other items. The March 2013 issue of Elle magazine spotlights the trend: “Step into spring with one of fashion’s most enduring warm-weather must-haves: raffia. (Now in every color under the sun).”

Huge colorful earrings from Dolce & Gabbana made of metal and raffia are ubiquitous in fashion ads and editorials. They are featured on the model above, pictured in the March 2013 issue of Elle, along with other examples of raffia-trimmed accessories. She also wears a delicate gold cross pendant necklace from Paloma Picasso for Tiffany & Co. and stacks of bracelets: tubular glass bead bracelets and claw beaded bracelets from Alexis Bittar; a yellow gold bangle from Ippolita; a chrysoprase bangle from Phillips House; and a yak-bone bracelet with Swarovski pavé detail from Jewels by Dunn. A beaded tassel necklace from Tory Burch is shown as a charm on the raffia handbag from Dolce & Gabbana.

Also from the March 2013 issue of Elle, here’s a close-up of a raffia- and stone-embellished necklace from Dolce & Gabbana included in a spread on tribal-inspired accessories.

The March 2013 issue of Lucky mixes raffia and pom-pom earrings from Dolce & Gabbana with other global-influenced jewelry and fashions. The model wears a leaf necklace from callixto.com; a skull necklace of green pyrite and bronze from Pamela Love; a pendant necklace of brass and oxidized silver from vanessalianne.com; an Isabel Marant tassel necklace; wood bangles from Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer; and a resin ring from R.J. Graziano. The model is clothed in a Max Mara jacket, a top from veronicabeard.com, pants from Marc by Marc Jacobs, and booties from Daniele Michetti.

The January 2013 issue of Marie Claire features another version of metal and raffia earrings from Dolce & Gabbana along with a top, skirt, shoes, and scarf from that design house.

Dolce & Gabbana is by no means the only designer utilizing raffia in jewelry designs. The April 2013 issue of InStyle pictures a bright necklace of bead, raffia, and silk twill with silk ribbon from Forest of Chintz.

Pom-poms made of raffia along with a variety of beads adorn a necklace from Tory Burch pictured in the December 2012 issue of Elle. The model at right wears an ensemble from Prabal Gurung and carries a leather and raffia bag by Tory Burch.

The April 2013 issue of InStyle features raffia used in a variety of accessories, including a bright Dolce & Gabbana tote, Tory Bruch wedges, and a fedora from Albertus Swanepoel, along with a raffia and wood bead necklace from R.J. Graziano.

Let me end with one of the innumerable ads from Dolce & Gabbana, ubiquitous in the fashion magazines this season. There’s no doubt that the design house’s raffia-embellished jewelry evokes a fun-filled time on the sea.
