Ready, set, shop! This week jewelry industry pros are either wrapping up their visits to Italy for the VicenzaOro show (JCK editor-in-chief Victoria Gomelsky is “going for the gold” there as we speak) or gearing up for the Tucson gem shows and Centurion in the United States. That could be some form of pregaming (we have some ideas for that) or literally touching down in Arizona before things really get going out there later this month.
And if you’re more of a vintage jewelry collector than a gem hunter? There’s an auction that’s right up your alley.
Bonhams Los Angeles Curated Curiosities: Jan. 25 (online)
Fans of Bakelite jewelry will be delighted to know that more than 80 beguiling examples are headed to auction, part of a single-owner collection that includes bracelets and brooches galore. JCK highlighted a few of the most whimsical styles in this report, and don’t miss the wonderfully maximalist layered heart necklace if you’re shopping for Valentine’s Day.
VicenzaOro: Ends Jan. 24 (in person)
You have two more days to hit VicenzaOro, Italy’s premier gold, jewelry and watch fair. This edition includes more than 1,300 exhibitors from 36 countries. As JCK contributing editor Karen Dybis noted in this article, the January event will follow a theme of helping the jewelry industry “discover more” according Marco Carniello, global exhibition director of jewelry and fashion for the Italian Exhibition Group (IEG), which organizes the show. The goal is to help jewelers, manufacturers, and related businesses “explore the design and market trends that will influence the new season.” FOMO? Some of the events are being livestreamed.
Gem X Winter Member Mixer—Let’s Talk Tucson: Jan. 24, 5 p.m. ET (online)
If the topic is the Tucson Gem Show, which kicks off in part this week, then color us happy! Gem X is hosting a Zoom get-together where members are invited to trade stories about the colored gemstone shopping event of the year. Have you gone in the past and have tips to share? Are you planning on going and want to know what others are doing? Whether you are a show veteran or a newbie, here’s your chance to share insights—and take gem orders for anyone who would like a souvenir. (Or something even more significant!) RSVP here.
Tucson Gem Shows: Starting Jan. 26
Some of our favorite gem and jewelry shows kick off in the desert this week, including the 22nd Street Show, Kino Gem & Mineral Show, and Pueblo Gem & Mineral Show. Whether you’re looking for finished jewelry, vintage finds, loose gemstones, or polished crystal keepsakes, the tents will be open and the bargains will be next-level! Visit this calendar for all the where-and-when particulars, and to make plans for the other Tucson shows that open later in January.
Centurion Jewelry Show: Jan. 28–Feb. 1
Held at the Arizona Biltmore resort in Phoenix, this high-end affair may well be your sole desert fix or an appetizer course to the extravaganza happening in Tucson. Whatever brings you here, be sure to check out JCK editor favorites Graziela, İTÄ Fine Jewelry, KC Designs, Messika, Omi Privé, Oscar Heyman, Vlora, and more.
The Jewelry District Podcast, Episode 87: Ongoing
If you’re wondering what the hot sellers are going to be at Tucson, don’t worry: JCK editor-in-chief Victoria Gomelsky and news director Rob Bates put the question to @gemfluencer Dave Bindra (pictured), vice president of B&B Fine Gems, in the most recent episode of our podcast. OK, one spoiler: Spinel, Bindra’s favorite stone, should be at the top of your list. Queue up this pod for listening on the plane or during your drive out West.
