These Buzzworthy Rings Are The Bombé

Bombé rings have been around since the early 1900s, but the domed style—from the French literally meaning “bomb-shaped”—is especially buzzy these days.

This bulbous style has seen varied aesthetics, from elaborate Edwardian filigree and art deco–era diamonds to today’s ultramodern pavé styles and even those made without any gems. It’s one of those styles that has always been around—plentifully at that—but hasn’t always gotten the recognition it deserves, like an actor you see in everything but never learn their name. Though, in the last several years, and especially very recently, bombé seems to be the buzzword of the ring category.

“Bombé rings are bold and can express individual style in the same way cocktail rings do,” says Lauren Levy, president of Lauren DeYoung Jewelry, a company specializing in fine art deco and period jewelry, among other things. “They can be sleek in all gold or shimmer with diamonds and colorful gemstones. Perhaps their current popularity is a stylistic swing away from stacking multiple smaller pieces or could be a result of people feeling free and emboldened post-pandemic.”

Levy said it best, and what’s more, the selection of bombé pieces below perfectly demonstrate why everyone’s talking about them right now.
