Britt’s Pick: The Kbang Crown by EdoEyen

If any one accessory has been a necessity during my time in quarantine, it’s been one for the hair.

Headbands, clips, hats, pins—anything to distract from the current state of my mane, which has been relegated to a matter of relative unimportance in light of the current situation, as perhaps it should be.

Still, for anyone who can relate, that doesn’t mean we don’t need something that makes us feel good, dresses up those wild tresses as we tame them to do something, anything that appears normal.

A tiara, now that would be just it.

So it’s the latest upcoming release from sister design duo EdoEyen (a new brand I profiled in November 2020) that has me eschewing any plans for a haircut, content with a forever “mom bun” so long as there’s an adornment such as this to help it glow.

This newest addition is called the Kbang crown, and it’s from the designers’ Face collection, a gorgeous line of culturally inspired jewelry that pays homage to the designers’ native Cambodia.

The kbang is a piece traditionally worn in front of the mokot, a long conical headdress donned by royalty and often depicted worn by divinity. More recently the diadem-like piece has been worn as costume jewelry by classical Cambodian ballet dancers.

To wear this piece, one needs be neither royalty nor divinity nor proficient in the art of dance, and the featured design is streamlined to make it wearable every day. Though it is important that one knows its inspiration and history, so as to fully convey its meaning to all those who will no doubt ogle it.

The crown’s bas-relief circular design took inspiration from the Angkor Banteay Srei temple (its name means “citadel of women”), and features distinctively Southeast Asian architectural influences.

EdoEyen is offering the crown in 14k or 18k gold, sterling silver, 18k gold–plated brass, or rose gold–plated brass, with prices ranging from $1,350 to $60,000.
