Melbourne Museum to Showcase Pink Diamond Collection

Museums Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, has partnered with New York–based LJ West Diamonds to showcase a collection of natural Australian pink diamonds at its Dynamic Earth gallery.

More than 100 gemstones found in Wilinggin, Australia’s Kimberley region, are part of the display, which opened on Nov. 5. Notable features include the 2.83 carat Argyle Violet, one of the rarest jewels in the world, and the “Picasso of the collection,” according to Larry West, owner and founder of LJ West Diamonds. The stone, which is reportedly the only stone in history to carry its color grading produced by the presence of hydrogen, has been on display at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles since 2016.

“Museums Victoria is pleased to present this world-first display of some of the earth’s extraordinary beauties,” said Museums Victoria director and CEO Lynley Crosswell in a statement. “The exhibition will bring to light their dazzling hues, the fascinating science and the precise skill required to cut these exquisite gemstones.”

Larry West has been building this collection of Argyle Pink diamonds for over 30 years, and now many of them will go on display for the first time. “I am thrilled for the best of the collection to be back in Australia and presented as the largest pink diamond exhibition ever,” West said in a statement.

The exhibition will run through Jan. 29, 2023 at the Melbourne Museum. Tickets are available here.
