The annual summer trends report from Pinterest, compiled based on search data from more than 600 million users, reveals a clear cultural shift toward the iconography of sports.
For whatever reason—perhaps the World Cup (which starts this week and takes place partly in the U.S.), or just the increasing intersection of fashion and athletics—this summer is shaping up to be a decidedly sporty one.
According to Pinterest, team colors and apparel, as well as other sport-related clothing, are being worn in unexpected ways—and to surprising places. Jerseys are taking on a more elevated role as going-out attire, athletic wear is becoming all-occasion dressing, and athletes themselves (particularly women) are emerging as a new class of style stars.
Female sports stars such as Alysa Liu, Caitlin Clark, Coco Gauff, and Eileen Gu, along with sports-adjacent celebs like Georgina Rodríguez, are driving conversations around fashion and personal style, and fueling Pinterest searches by consumers who’d like to capture a bit of their signature aesthetics.
Pinners are also ensuring their sporty style comes with a healthy dose of polish. Luxury sports, particularly Formula 1 racing, are behind rising searches for terms like F1 Monaco outfits and Formula 1 aesthetic. Nautical pursuits are making waves as well, with searches reportedly climbing for vintage sailor aesthetic and boat day outfit.
Jewelry is scarcely mentioned in the report—aside from a 303% increase in searches for bandana jewelry—but it runs quietly throughout many of the featured trends. “Off-duty varsity,” for example, incorporates layered necklaces, from pearls and chains to oversize gold pendants, many of them crosses.
Jewelry retailers can create opportunities from what’s in the Pinterest report. Consider merchandising displays around team or national color palettes if they resonate with your local market, and keep classic pearls, chains, and pendants well stocked to appeal to shoppers embracing their fashionable athletic side this summer.
