Another Big One! Lucara Unearths 998 Carat Diamond

Lucara Diamond has continued its winning streak of unearthing massive diamonds from its Karowe mine in Botswana.

The new find (pictured)—weighing in at a cool 998 cts.—was found using new technology that has allowed Karowe to deliver an unprecedented collection of jaw-dropping stones, including the record-setting 1,109 ct. Lesedi la Rona in 2015.

This year, Karowe has produced 31 diamonds greater than 100 cts., including 10 greater than 200 cts.—the largest being this new one and the 549 ct. Sethunya, which was recently sold to Louis Vuitton.

As a part of a deal Lucara signed earlier this year with HB Antwerp, HB will cut and market the diamond, with Lucara getting a portion of the final polished price.

“To recover two [diamonds over 500 cts.] in 10 months along with the many other high-quality diamonds across all the size ranges is a testament to the unique aspect of the resource at Karowe and the mine’s ability to recover these large and rare diamonds,” said Lucara CEO Eira Thomas in a statement. “Operations at Karowe have continued through 2020 and operational challenges, due to COVID-19 restrictions, have been met with professionalism by the team.”
