JCK Jewelry Agenda: Week of July 18

Share

Summer has us dreaming about the seaside. What we wouldn’t give to teleport to East Hampton and Nantucket this week, and not just to bask in the sun. Both vacation destinations are hosting special jewelry events. On the Left Coast, a Bonhams sale features bejeweled treasures owned or made by two midcentury legends. And finally, get your dose of summer school at JA’s third annual national convention dedicated to jewelry issues new and next, taking place virtually, of course.

Art Smith Hoop Earrings
Sterling silver ear clips by Art Smith; est. $1,500–$2,000

A rare collection of jewels owned by Sammy Davis Jr., including a fancy brown diamond ring (estimated at $7,000 to $9,000) that he was frequently photographed wearing while performing, is going on the block this week at Bonhams’ California Jewels sale. The same sale also features six pieces by leading midcentury modern jeweler Art Smith from a single collector who recalls her mother befriending the Afro-Cuban artist in the late 1940s. “All of Mom’s pieces were either purchased by her from Art Smith, by my father as a gift for my mother, or were a gift from Art Smith to my mother,” the collector said in a statement. “Her choices were sculptural, elegant pieces of art, ahead of their time, and timeless statement pieces designed to be worn every day.”
