The GIA grading lab has introduced two new reports—a low-cost report for lab-grown diamonds and a supplement report that measures a diamond’s light performance.
First, as previously announced, GIA is offering a cheaper lab-grown report, which will replace its current lab-grown Diamond Dossier.
The revised Dossier will cost $55 for a 1 ct. laboratory-grown diamond, down from $85. It will not include information on a diamond’s growth method or post-growth treatments. GIA will still offer its standard lab-grown report, which includes that information.
The new Dossier will include full 4Cs grading. It will be available for lab-created diamonds from 0.15 ct. to 3.99 cts. GIA reports for laboratory-grown diamonds are available only in a digital format.
All diamonds will be laser-inscribed with the GIA report number and the words LABORATORY-GROWN to ensure they are differentiated from natural diamonds.

GIA’s new supplemental report, the AGS Ideal Report, tracks light performance—i.e., how well a diamond handles light—by grading the gem according to the American Gem Society’s (AGS) light performance scale.
The scale uses AGS’ ASET (Angular Spectrum Evaluation Tool) technology, and users have the option of including an AGS ASET image on the report.
The digital-only supplement will be offered for D-to-Z natural and laboratory-grown round brilliants, as well as the following fancy shapes: cushion, oval, emerald, radiant, and princess.
The report will cost an additional $25. It stems from last year’s announcement that the AGS laboratory was closing and its operations were being merged into GIA’s. The AGS lab’s former Las Vegas headquarters is being used to conduct cut research for GIA, says AGS. All grading has been moved to GIA.
