Fabergé’s One-of-a-Kind Majesty, Its First Bag Since 1917

Share

Fabergé may once have been best known for its famously luxurious eggs—they remain treasured objects around the world—but the storied brand’s modern offerings range from bracelets and necklaces to cufflinks, watches, and even engagement rings.

What Fabergé may not be well known for is its bags—wearable pieces of art that are a part of the company’s design history. From 1908 to 1917, Peter Carl Fabergé, son of founding jeweler Gustav Fabergé, created a number of mesh bags that featured solid frames and gold or silver-gilt mesh. The company hadn’t offered another bag since—until now. And this one is fantastically festooned with the dramatic detail the Fabergé name is so associated with.

The one-of-a-kind Majesty clutch bag is the sort of piece that could serve as the focal point of an ensemble, whether on the red carpet or at a formal holiday soiree. Its nods to the brand’s history are museum-worthy, and its gemstones—Gemfields rubies and emeralds among them—are divine.

At the top, a cut-out gold egg serves as the bag’s clasp, the ideal intro to a design by Fabergé. From there, a network of rock crystal—which pays tribute to Fabergé’s intricately decorated fans of yore—takes shape, echoing the construction of the beautiful Crystal Palace, the Sir Joseph Paxton–designed glass building in London that housed the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The clutch’s outer scalloped lines are dotted with yellow and pink sapphires, punctuated by intersecting sections of filigree-like design, set with tsavorite and diamonds.

The eye is naturally drawn to the design’s spectacular center, rich in color from its setting of Gemfields Zambian emeralds, carved turquoise, and guilloché enamel. The colorful setting echos at the north and south poles of the piece, creating a satisfying symmetry that’s more than pleasing to see.

Dangling from the lower part of the clutch, and set between two glossy pearls, a tassel comprising pearl, ruby, and emerald serves as more than a mobile accent—the piece detaches so it can be worn as a pendant.

The tassel isn’t the only surprise: The bag’s wrist strap, a rose gold bangle adorned with rubies, detaches to be worn as a bracelet, a modern accent that blends beautifully with any existing collections one might have.

The one-of-a-kind bag, which was made available on Oct. 18, is available to view via private or virtual appointment.
