Christie’s is bringing what it says is an auction first to its June 9 Magnificent Jewels sale at Rockefeller Center: a 31.62 ct. fancy blue diamond that would be the largest of its kind ever offered at auction.
Called The Azure Blue, the pear-shape stone carries a presale estimate of $6.5 million to $8.5 million. The GIA has graded it natural color, fancy blue, and potentially Internally Flawless—a combination that puts it at the very top of the colored diamond hierarchy. Blue diamonds of significant size are among the scarcest stones in the market, and one with this color and clarity is the kind of lot that appears perhaps once in a generation.
“With its striking color, exceptional size, and elegant shape, The Azure Blue is a rare masterpiece of nature,” said Claibourne Poindexter, Christie’s head of jewelry for the Americas, in a statement. “Christie’s is honored to present this superb stone to a new generation of collectors this June.”
The stone is being presented in collaboration with The Fine Art Group, an independent advisory firm, and will be offered set in a ring. Christie’s points to the evenness of the diamond’s hue as a particular distinction; color consistency across a stone of this size is its own rarity.

Sharing the top billing at the sale is a 5.04 ct. fancy vivid blue marquise-modified brilliant-cut diamond, also estimated at $6.5 million to $8.5 million. Fancy vivid is the GIA’s highest color saturation designation, so while this one is considerably smaller, it’s not exactly playing second fiddle. Two blue diamonds at the same estimate level in one sale is the kind of thing that gets the colored diamond market’s attention.
Additional highlights from the Magnificent Jewels auction are expected to be announced later this month on May 19.
