Don’t let Chanel’s decades-long association with the world of fashion fool you. The brand is a serious player in the world of horology, too. At Watches and Wonders, the maison introduced a series of wristwatches, secret long necklaces, and a secret ring that took the concept of game time to its most luxurious level.

Designed at the Chanel Watchmaking Creation Studio in Paris and assembled at the Chanel Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, the Coco Game capsule collection leads with an extraordinary chessboard in which Gabrielle Chanel, the black or white queen, is the central figure. Flanked by pawns crafted in gold, ceramic, and diamonds, the queens—adorned in diamond tweed suits—also serve as timepieces that can be worn as necklaces on a white gold, diamond, and onyx chain. To tell the time, simply look beneath their pedestals.

The collection continues with graphic time-telling jewels featuring a pixelated pattern that evokes arcade games of decades past. In one elaborate timepiece, Mademoiselle, hand-sculpted from 18k white gold, sits on the dial of a 43 mm wristwatch in her signature pose, adorned in a white tweed suit studded with “tweed-set” diamonds that lend the outfit a woven effect.

In the brand’s new J12 Coco Game watch, available in glossy white and matte black ceramic editions, a pixelated version of Mademoiselle encircles the dial, which features indexes set with brilliant-cut diamonds and a bezel with a baguette motif.

The unapologetically whimsical combination of haute joaillerie, high precision quartz timekeeping, and odes to pop culture serves as a dazzling reminder that luxury need not be humorless.

For those who prefer a less pop-forward take on timekeeping, the brand also introduced Noeud de Camélia, a collection of five secret timepieces—four wristwatches and a ring—that honor Mademoiselle’s favorite flower and the graphic way in which the dandies of the 1910s wore it (white camellias on black jackets). To tell the time, simply look—where else?—beneath the ice.
