Dubai-based Toi Fine Jewelry is putting its spin on a hot wearable tech product, the Oura ring.
The Oura, which tracks a wearer’s fitness and sleep activity, debuted in 2015 but took ages to get a glam-up. Only this spring did Suzanne Kalan release a collection dedicated to elevating wellness rings like the Oura.
Just as Kalan’s tech ring jackets use her signature Fireworks setting, Toi’s version bears the marks of its maker’s design DNA: enamel and satiny white gold, bezel-set round diamonds dangling like charm confetti. The four-pointed star that’s a hallmark of Toi jewelry creates a negative space pattern for the smart ring to peek through, so the look can differ depending on the ring.
While Oura rings seem to have gained momentum recently as more consumers turn to wearable wellness devices, wearable tech is something seemingly everybody was talking about 10 or so years ago (including on this blog)—the buzz ushered in by a combination of influential advancements in the technology. First came Google Glass, all the rage for anyone able to get their hands on a pair, in 2013. Around the same time, fitness bands such as the original FitBit and the Nike+ band (I was inseparable from this thing for about a year!)—which had already been available for several years—surged in popularity.
And then the big one arrived: Apple Watch, announced in fall of 2014 and officially for sale in 2015. Though earlier “smart” models from the likes of Casio and Pebble paved the way, the Apple Watch was mind-blowing. It felt like the future of jewelry was here—but was it pretty enough to please the jewelry obsessed?
Apple partnered with Hermès on leather straps for the Apple Watch release, but jewelry designers eventually began producing their own bracelets for Apple Watch. Now it’s a pretty solid niche market—if you want a pretty, jewelry-fied band for your Apple Watch, you can get one.
Will more brands be entering the tech-as-adornment market? This seems like a specialized category, but consumer trends toward both personalized jewelry and wellness present an opportunity. Toi’s ring jacket is customizable, available in an assortment of color options to suit various tastes and styles.
