Los Angeles-based Vram has a way with jewelry. You could say that about many designer brands, but it’s a sentiment that you immediately get when you see the work of Vram.
Creator Vram Minassian’s sculptural, often celestial-esque pieces are a memorable destination for any gemstone. In this epic style—earrings dubbed Supernova—a pair of amethysts get to travel to space. Well, sort of.
Do you know what a supernova is? I fell into a rabbit hole on NASA’s website (OK, fine, NASA’s website for kids), reading about them. But the vital line is this: A supernova is the biggest explosion humans have ever seen. The events are so bright, they can outshine entire galaxies for a period of time—days, even months. And they can be seen across the universe.
Not a bad moniker for this pair of earrings then, right? Well, apart from the whole exploding part.
Actually, it’s the explosion that’s demonstrated so beautifully in Vram’s one-of-a-kind pair, done in 18k yellow gold as eight sharp rays explode from the center, each tipped with a sparkling bezel-set diamond.
It appears as though the amethyst has made its entrance, like a pop star exploding into a stage. The fireworks go off and—presto!—they’re there. Beautifully purple with an intriguing octagonal cut—and bezel setting—February’s birthstone has never looked better. The gemstones are set upside down, allowing us to see up through the stone, a new perspective. It’s not often a jeweler sets an Asscher-cut gemstone upside down, but it’s a choice that makes the earrings all the more intriguing.
The whole thing says, “BAM! Look at my amethyst earrings.” And we listen, because, I mean, how could you possibly miss them?
