Britt’s Pick: Studio Renn’s Puffball Rough Earrings

Share

It’s Nov. 1, so welcome to the holiday season! With that, let’s get festive.

A ring from Studio Renn’s Puffball collection was featured here a few weeks back, in Amy Elliott’s coverage of The Jewelry Edit’s pop-up on Park Avenue. From that point on I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

“The Gemstone Puffballs are clusters of spheres,” reads the brand’s description of its collection. “An exploration of textures, they achieve a tactile sensibility using a combination of straight and reverse-set gems. This contrasted setting leads to (an)other luster–endlessly evolving.”

I’ve seen similar designs before, that spherical shape dotted with culet-up diamonds. But they tend to resemble medieval weaponry more than a feathery pom-pom. All versions are fabulous, but Studio Renn’s is different—tactile, downy, fluffy, even.

How does one go about turning diamonds into—as the collection’s name so joyfully describes—puffballs?

“”The Puffball rough earrings are made in 18k white gold and reverse-set with partially processed rough diamonds,” says Rahul Jhaveri, cofounder and creative director of Studio Renn. “They pay homage to what I did before I started the studio—I used to source, cut, and polish rough diamonds. Through this work, I am looking at the same material—rough diamonds—through a very different lens by leaving them partially processed and incomplete. It is through such innovations and interventions that we at the studio design by disrupting how jewelry is conceptualized, perceived, and made.”

Studio Renn offers other takes on this collection including Gemstone Puffball—set with reverse diamonds and sapphires, which was part of an earlier iteration that explores the study of volume in the form of spheres—and Puffball Void, which explores the “unsettling nature of incompleteness in this silhouette.”

While the above pair are a personal favorite, any one of the creations from Studio Renn’s Puffball series would be a beautiful addition to any holiday ensemble (one that might never be taken off).
