Britt’s Pick: Mindi Mond’s Ruby Spike Earrings

Share

A big storm was on its way—“the biggest we’ve seen in several years!” they said—and so it was with visions of snowy hills and bundled-up kids that we entered the weekend with anticipation.

It rained. And quite a bit, too. Just yucky, icy winter rain that feels grossly unfair—so cold it makes the house feel damp, chilling you to the bone, but still too warm for magical snow.

As a grown-up and homeowner, I’m aware of the ramifications of a big snow day—shoveling driveways and sidewalks, I’m pretty sure you’re supposed to worry about pipes freezing or something—but the kid in me says, “Bring on the snow!” To build frozen people and sled in the backyard, to marvel at as it comes down in fluffy white drops, a festive sight even after Christmas.

We may not see a white winter in the D.C. area at all, with weather patterns changing and warmer weather pushing north. Or we’ll see it in March, as we prepare to leave for spring break (isn’t that how it always goes?). But with the idea of snow in my head, I’m bound to look for it everywhere. Which is why I immediately zoned in on this cheery pair of earrings from Mindi Mond.

The perfect combination of wintry weather and Valentine’s Day spice, these Mindi Mond beauties have the look of snowflakes without being strictly tied to winter, thanks to their fiery centers. Each earring holds an oval Burma ruby in the middle, surrounded by diamond-tipped rays and short spokes capped by spheres of gold.

I’m told the earrings—which were converted from 1950s brooches—have recently been reset to feature a drop design. So if you’re looking for a very of-the-moment style, you’ve found it. With two-tone metal and an alluring red to blaze through winter, the earrings can be shown off all year long—no snow necessary.
