Britt’s Pick: Northern Lights Necklace By Bowen NYC

Share

I imagine that seeing the northern lights, the phenomenon otherwise known as aurora borealis, in person would be life changing.

We’ve all seen the dancing waves of light in pictures, in videos, like a painting across the night sky, and some, maybe, have become transfixed by even those. But to experience nature’s show of lights, right before you? That’s bucket-list material.

And one day, after I do get a view of the northern lights, as I’m packed into a parka with a permanent finger on the shoot button of my camera, I’ll probably want more than pictures to commemorate it.

Like this one-of-a-kind necklace from Bowen NYC, inspired by, well, you know.

“The Northern Lights necklace was inspired by a friend’s yoga retreat to Iceland I went on,” says Bowen NYC founder Julie Bowen Meizels. “As beautiful as Iceland is, there is always a hunt for seeing the northern lights—you allow hotels to wake you in the middle of the night if they are seen in the sky. We saw only a brief appearance of them one night at the Golden Circle, but the experience lingered in my jewelry mind.”

While the northern lights occur all the time—literally all the time—it’s all about being in the right place in the right time. The winter season is a viewer’s best bet, a fact that coincides beautifully with the gemstones on display in Bowen NYC’s creation.

A concoction of winter’s birthstones—tanzanite of December, tsavorite of January, tourmaline of October (well, OK, winter-ish)—the piece is an ode to the season and one of its most incredible sights, a warm glow of bold gemstones radiating from an icy turquoise heaven.

The turquoise in the necklace is actually lacquer atop a laser-cut round cable chain with some of its 18 karat gold peeping through. A look all its own (the brand sells the chain solo as well), add a gemstone party to the mix, and it’s the only piece necessary for holiday occasions and beyond, for (light) years to come.

Top: One-of-a-kind Northern Lights necklace in 18k yellow gold with turquoise lacquer, 6 cts. t.w. tsavorite, 6.5 cts. t.w. tanzanite, and 2 cts. t.w. tourmaline, $18,000; Bowen NYC
