Bangkok Jewelry Show Sticking to Original Dates, Will Screen Visitors

We’ve reported that the Hong Kong jewelry shows have been rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic and will now take place in May. But organizers of the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, scheduled to run Feb. 25–29, announced Thursday that the show is sticking to its original date pattern.

In an email sent to JCK, Napadol Thongmee, commercial consul for show co-organizer the Thai Trade Center in New York, said, “We understand about the current situation in Asia, and Thailand is closely monitoring sensitive areas with large numbers of Chinese tourists. Nevertheless, in the fair we will also screen and check all visitors who will be attending the fair and make sure everything is going well…. We have international-standard diagnosis and medical care and will work closely with the World Health Organization and all related departments to build trust among citizens and tourists.”

Fair attendees have been issued a letter from Somdet Susomboon, director general of the Department of International Trade Promotion, which is organizing the show. He wrote, “Thailand Ministry of Public Health has stepped up the alert code of [the coronavirus] to level 3: avoid travel to area affected. The screening of all passengers arriving from risk areas has been carried out at Thailand’s five international airports, as well as at border areas and ports.”

A list of coronavirus preventative measures were then spelled out in the letter, among them an increase in hand-sanitizer stations and regular wipe downs of common areas with antiviral agents. The fair will also offer medical face masks to those who want them and will scan attendees who’ve flown in from affected areas in China for fever with thermal scanners and infrared thermometers.

Susomboon closes the letter with a promise to work with the government’s Ministry of Public Health to institute any and all further precautionary measures it deems appropriate.
