Bye-Bye Barbiecore, Hello Rom-Com Core: The 2023 Pinterest Predicts Report

Share

Barbiecore, we hardly knew ye. But if Pinterest’s trends for 2023 are to be believed, we’ll be ditching our hot-pink duds for early-2000s-inspired fashions popularized by the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Meg Ryan. Introducing: rom-com core.

While one of the most intriguing tidbits to come out of the platform’s annual Pinterest Predicts report, rom-com core (think slip dresses, tube tops, cargo pants, and claw clips) is hardly the only one.

Based on months of search data, the annual report has, according to Pinterest, been quite accurate in its predictions. Eight out of the 10 trends Pinterest predicted for 2022 have reportedly come to pass. Also according to Pinterest, trends gathered from its data sustain higher monthly growth than other places on the internet, making them more legitimate than a quickly passing fad (perhaps like some seen on TikTok or Instagram).

With all that said, it’s a good idea for advertisers to pay attention to this latest report and find ways to connect with young audiences through them. Jewelry has a big role to play here, and besides, it’s awfully fun. Here are some of the most relevant (to jewelers) predictions for 2023.

Aside from the rom-com core mentioned above, Pinterest tells us to shed our sweatpants and embrace airy styles. Gen Z and millennial users have been searching for lace, tulle, ruffles, and shimmer, so it looks like we’ll all be dressing up a bit more this year—and we mean all: “ruffle shirt for men” was one of the top searches according to the report. This dressed-up vibe suits the men’s jewelry boom well, and what shimmers better than jewelry?

Black weddings might have been the thing for 2022, but next year, expect rusty shades like burnt orange, terra-cotta, and copper to ignite the events, according to search data. Should we make room for fire opal engagement rings?

Vintage jewelry may always have a hold on us, but Pinners were reportedly looking to the future with sci-fi dressing coming out as a top theme. Searches for dystopian outfits, avant-garde outfit, cyber streetwear, and gamer girl look were all up. What this means for jewelry? Think less dopamine dressing (bye-bye animal jewels) and more dressing for a future that, according to the search terms at least, looks pretty bleak. But hey, at least the outfits will be cool.

Parties are back in a big way, and if this report is any indication, everyone’s getting in on the festivities. Searches for 80th birthday party decorations, 50th anniversary cookies, 100th birthday party ideas, and golden anniversary party were up big-time this year. You know what else goes great with milestone birthdays and anniversaries? Jewelry.

When it comes to home decor, it looks as though people are craving mushrooms—searches for fantasy mushroom art and vintage mushroom decor are evidence of this booming trend. As for jewelry? We know exactly where to look—paging Brent Neale.

Fringed fashions are predicted to be up in 2023, in items such as beaded dresses, tassel jackets, and and even fringed wedding dresses. For maximalist fringe appeal, tassel jewelry is typically readily available and will almost certainly see new additions if this forecast bears fruit.
