Britt’s Pick: Amáli’s Pixie Dust Boulder Opal Ring

Not every opal needs to look like it swallowed a rainbow. Some are quieter about their magic.

That’s what caught my attention about Amáli’s one-of-a-kind boulder opal ring—that and the brand’s signature metalwork. The 4.86 ct. stone is earthy and clouded, its flashes of lavender, blue, and pink emerging almost shyly from a landscape of warm brown and cream. It feels less like a gemstone trying to show off and more like something you have to spend a minute with.

Designer Sara Freedenfeld knows the feeling. “When a stone captivates me, I feel an instant resonance with it,” she says. “I’m drawn to distinctive qualities, even unexpected details or imperfections, that give a gem its own rare beauty.”

The interplay of color in this particular opal caught her eye immediately, and she could already picture the stone inside one of Amáli’s signature handcrafted gold bezels. “There’s a quiet mysticism in the way subtle iridescence emerges from an otherwise earthy palette,” Freedenfeld says. “I’m always looking for stones that offer something unexpected, something beyond what we might typically associate with that gemstone.”

That feels especially apt for boulder opal, where the material it formed within remains part of the visual story rather than something to be edited out. That earthiness makes the flashes of color all the more surprising, and knowing there will never be another gem exactly like it makes it all the more alluring.

“This stone is one of a kind, as are the stones in all of our gemstone jewelry,” Freedenfeld says. “I choose each stone for its individual character—its distinctive colors, patterns, and details—so every one feels like a small work of art.”

That individuality is perhaps opal’s greatest selling point—and also part of what can make some customers nervous about wearing it. Freedenfeld’s advice is practical rather than precious: Keep opals clean, avoid harsh chemicals and impacts, and take them off for strenuous activities. “As with any gemstone, thoughtful wear and proper care make a difference,” she says. “We also design our pieces with durability in mind, so customers can wear and enjoy them with confidence.”

Which is good, because an opal this unique would be wasted tucked away in a box.
