Blue Nile has joined in the celebration of the United States’ semiquincentennial with the debut of three jewelry pieces made with an American-sourced natural gemstone: the Montana sapphire.
The 250th Anniversary Collection premiered on the Blue Nile website on Tuesday, a week and a half before the nation’s momentous birthday on July 4th. It consists of a ring ($1,450), necklace ($3,200), and earrings ($3,900), all set with Montana sapphires, as well as natural diamonds, in 14k gold.
Blue Nile sourced its Montana sapphires from the Rock Creek mine, also known as Gem Mountain. Located in the far west part of the huge state, the mine has been active since the late 1800s and sits on more than 3,000 acres of sapphire-rich terrain, says Blue Nile chief merchandising officer Katie Liappas.
“No two stones are alike—each shaped by volcanic activity and millions of years of natural pressure,” Liappas says. “Defined by their origin, traceability, and singular color palette, Montana sapphires offer a character unlike any other.”

These pieces reflect Blue Nile’s efforts to offer fine jewelry that speaks to heritage and craftsmanship—key themes in Blue Nile’s marketing and social media at a time of heightened interest in Americana.
“We set out to create a collection that brings a distinctively American perspective to fine jewelry featuring natural sapphires sourced from Montana and defined by their uniqueness to our country and organic beauty,” Liappas says.
Blue Nile parent company Signet has said it is positioning Blue Nile as its “elevated” jewelry brand. Signet plans to integrate the Clear Cut, a diamond and bridal jewelry specialist that it recently acquired, with Blue Nile.

Liappas tells JCK that Blue Nile hopes to attract consumers with its choice of materials and their provenance, as well as its jewelry designs. The blue, teal, and green hues of the Montana sapphires are highlighted by the diamonds in the 250th Anniversary jewelry, she says.
“At Blue Nile, natural sapphires represent the pinnacle of our colored-gemstone assortment. Long associated with quality, value, and timeless elegance, sapphire embodies a rich heritage while remaining relevant to today’s customer,” Liappas says.
“When paired with natural diamonds, sapphires create a striking balance of tradition and modern luxury,” she adds. “The depth of the sapphire combined with the brilliance of natural diamonds results in designs that are both classic and sophisticated. Together, they represent the perfect gemstone combination—bringing value, exceptional natural beauty, and an effortless sense of luxury to every piece.”
