Jack Vartanian’s nearly horizontal, comet-inspired earrings seem like the ideal way to punctuate fall’s forthcoming (and last night’s Met Gala) leather, vinyl, spike, and safety-pin looks. New from the Brazilian designer’s Universe collection, edgy and minimalist styles in 18k yellow, white, and black rhodium gold are available with diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and rubies (though I’m partial to emeralds—my birthstone). They contrast perfectly against that hint of black metal, and the mix of stones—ovals, pears, and hearts—complete the irony. A heart shape in a punk aesthetic? Yes, please! And just like the comet’s “linear expression of energy,” according to the Vartanian camp, each pair serves as a flash of color that molds to the ear and a nod to the brooding rebel spirit that is punk.
