Blue and Green Jewels to Soothe the Soul

We could all stand to hit the refresh button at this point.

That seems to be the trending narrative for numerous home and interior brands as they announce their colors of the year for 2022.

The recurring themes: calm, tranquility, peace, new beginnings. Nothing boisterous or celebratory (the vibrant yellow of Illuminating, one of Pantone’s 2021 Colors of the Year, was perhaps a bit too loudly optimistic in retrospect). Instead, it feels we have, at least in some ways, conceded: If we’re going to be continuously asked to hang in there, then let’s do so surrounded by serenity.

We haven’t yet heard from Pantone—the headliner, if you will, of the Color of the Year news—on its selection for 2022. But a number of other brands have come forward with announcements.

Syna mogul peacock — *Mogul peacock pendant in 18k yellow gold with shell cameo, 1.7 cts. t.w. blue diamonds, and 1.4 cts. t.w. tsavorite, $12,000; Syna*

Sherwin-Williams, for example, announced that its 2022 Color of the Year is Evergreen Fog, a “gentle green-gray that glories in the great outdoors.” The paint specialists said in an announcement that, “like a clean slate, this refreshing hue lets you reset and start fresh.”

Graham & Brown also suggests a calming cool hue, a paint called Breathe. “Breathe is a soothing mid blue, perfect for creating calm and peaceful spaces, which is exactly what we all need for the year ahead,” the company said in a statement.

Valspar, another popular paint brand, opted to select 12 hues rather than one for 2022, but soothing blues and greens are among them. “Valspar’s 2022 Colors of the Year provide consumers a wide range of naturally based warm colors that will not only help calm the nerves and boost the mood but also provide a confidence in what the future may hold,” said Valspar color marketing manager Sue Kim in a press release.

The selection offered by Behr might be my favorite hue of the bunch: Breezeway, a sealike blue-green that feels utterly placid. In a statement, Behr vice president of color and creative services Erika Woelfel described it as “a color that welcomes a hopeful sense of renewal, restoration, and healing.”

Finally, there are two other greens: Olive Sprig by PPG and Guacamole by Glidden, both relaxing, refreshing, and renewing.

What does this mean for jewelry? Nothing we didn’t already know—blue and green together are beyond ideal. We love all manner of cool-hued gemstones combined into one (more than one, in this case) remarkable design that feels just as good to wear as it looks. If calm is the word for 2022, take stock of your blue and green jewels pronto.
