One Earring Style to Rule the Summer

There were so many good looks to ponder from Sunday night’s Academy Awards, but the one I can’t get out of my mind is Kristen Wiig’s. She looked amazing from head to toe, her shining blond coif perfectly suited to the red of her dress. But those earrings. My goodness, the earrings! They cemented the look.

Created by none other than recent Gem Award recipient Nikos Koulis (for jewelry design), the golden near-hoops complete with long rays of glossy fringe are the ultimate look. Stick a fork in me, I’m done. I’ve found my silhouette of summer.

I find Koulis’ pair to be spectacularly incomparable, my favorite kind of proof that metal on its own, when expertly worked, can be equally as compelling as any gemstone-laden style (though diamond versions are also available). Its nuanced detail is quite unlike any other, though there are varieties in the same spirit that are just as heart-throbbingly good and worthy contenders for anyone’s summer staple.

Look to hoops dangling fringey charms, be they dagger- or feather-like in nature, so long as they come to a point (or upside-down pyramid) at the end. A quick Google search of “fringe hoop earrings” results in a range of styles with chain-link fringe, from the ultra-affordable fashion styles of your retail chain of choice to a few one-of-a-kind wonders that truly wouldn’t so much equal my earrings of summer but rather my earrings for life.

This style of fringe jewelry—certainly contemporary, but not new—saw a lot of play on last year’s runways, so it makes sense that it’s finding its footing now. It should also be noted that this particular style from Nikos Koulis isn’t brand-spanking new, either—the designer premiered a range of styles from his similar Oui collection at the 2018 Couture show in Las Vegas. This serves to exemplify that: a) amazing design is timeless, whether it’s 2 years old or 200; and b) aspirational celebrity styling can make us cuckoo for all manner of accessories. If this “trend” (as in, more jewelers feel inspired to put their spin on similar looks) lands, it may be highly accessible for me to get my wish: a high-quality, fringed pair of hoops that won’t break my home savings budget (if I were to go for broke, no doubt I’d be snapping up a similar pair from Koulis because, who wouldn’t?).

These are just a few styles that reflect the dreamiest earring aesthetic we’ve got going at the moment.
