I’ve gone on before about the significant presence a small piece of jewelry can have, but it was just the other day while walking around that I really saw it exemplified. I passed a woman on the street who was wearing kind of a bulky sweater, a bit voluminous, except it had a low neckline, like an exaggerated U-neck—not overly revealing—and she wore a single gold bar pendant that nestled right along her collarbones. It was the first thing I noticed, the way it stood out. Now, we often talk about how great layering is (and it is!), but I just don’t think this single piece would have stood out the way it did had it been grouped with other necklaces—it would have gotten lost. It was one of those super-casual, thrown-on looks that this woman probably didn’t even think twice about, but it made me notice and think, wow. I need to step up my necklace game.
