Kentucky jewelry store owner killed in armed robbery attempt

A jewelry store owner was fatally shot during an armed robbery attempt Thursday afternoon at an Owensboro, Ky., jewelry store, the Associated Press reports.

Samuel E. Garrett, 57, of Louisville died at Owensboro Mercy Health Systems Hospital from a single gunshot wound, Owensboro police reportedly said.

Witnesses told police that four men came into the Jewelry Chest store and took a ring from a woman who works there, the AP reports.

The suspects then told the woman, whose name was not released, to lie on the floor in a back room, police reportedly said. The employee said she heard a gunshot and discovered Garrett’s injury. Arntz said no other items were taken from the store other than the employee’s ring.

Arntz said witnesses saw four Hispanic men in their mid-20s leave the store following the shooting in a green Nissan Maxima, the AP reports. The suspects remained at large Thursday.
