Color Crush: I Think I Love Yellow Again

Reconnecting with jewels of the sunshine shade

I think it’s fairly safe to say that people are pleased with Pantone’s color choices for 2016—the gentle pink and blue shades are basically unoffending and quite versatile. But this isn’t a post about that, as much as I do, in fact, adore those colors. Recent appearances have me crushing on a completely different hue: yellow. My interest in the color was reinvigorated by none other than J. Lo, who looked incredible decked out in a yellow Michael Costello jumpsuit (with a cape!!) while hosting the American Music Awards in December. She brought out the color again at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards (this really is her color, by the way), in a (diamond bedecked) Giambattista Valli gown. Lopez wasn’t the only one rocking the sunshine hue. And because I’m a sucker, that’s all it took for me. Suddenly I’m really, really interested in seeing this color more and more—anyone else feeling this way? I actually wrote about it back in 2012 after the Emmy’s red carpet, so it makes sense that it was due for a reboot (they don’t even wait four years to reboot some movies, much less a color trend). What makes yellow so fascinating to me is its ability to incite such a fickle, torrid love affair. When it’s great, it’s really great. But it can be just as unappealing as it can be amazing, depending on its hue—and amount (ever tried to paint an entire room yellow? It’s not pretty). These jewels are a divine example of yellow done right. Don’t get me wrong: Each is inarguably exquisite already, but, since yellow and I are currently in the honeymoon stage, I love them that much more. I mean, how can you not?
