The oversized silhouettes and elaborate ornamentation appearing in the fall/winter collections calls for jewelry appropriate in mood and scale. It's time to bring out the earrings that look as though they might hail from the 1980s, the era of Dynasty and Dallas. Huge earrings are once again all the rage.

Dolce & Gabbana are at the forefront of fashion's return to oversized earrings, in part due to the lavish embellishment of the clothing with which the earrings are pictured. Smaller earrings couldn't stand up to these looks. Above is a bustier, skirt and clutch plus earrings, all from Dolce & Gabbana, pictured in the August 2012 issue of Marie Claire.

The September 2012 issue of Elle features an ensemble from Dolce & Gabbana consisting of an embroidered lace bodysuit worn with sunglasses and lace and Swarovski crystal earrings. She also wears a pink gold and diamond ring from De Beers.

From Capitol File Magazine, Issue no. 4, 2012, here's a wool coat with "gold jewel embroidery" from Dolce & Gabbana worn with that design house's heavily embellished satin headband and gold-plated baroque earrings.

Quite aside from the baroque opulence of Dolce & Gabbana, huge earrings are being reintroduced as accompaniment to everything from elegant or sexy evening looks to practical daywear.

The September 2012 issue of Real Simple adds dangling crystal drop sparklers from R.J. Graziano to a tailored tweed dress from CH Carolina Herrera, further accessorized with a Kenneth Jay Lane silver and crystal stretch belt and Portolano gloves.

Singer Miley Cyrus is profiled in the September 2012 issue of Marie Claire. In the photo above, she wears a gown from Tom Ford accented with huge drop earrings from Iradj Moini and a ring from Erickson Beamon. Her chain earring is her own.

Here's another look from the September 2012 issue of Marie Claire, adding huge drop earrings from House of Lavande to a dress, belt, and gloves ensemble from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci.

Actress Morena Baccarin wears a stunning Dior gown accented with matching blue crystal earrings and ring from Swarovski in this photo from the September 2012 issue of Los Angeles Confidential. Her rose gold bangles are from Switch Boutique.

Riffing off the Dolce & Gabbana bustier look pictured above, the August 2012 issue of Marie Claire suggests another look with huge feather-adorned earrings from Lizzie Fortunato. The ombre style necklace is from Banana Republic.

The August 2012 issue of Elle features a variety of ensembles with pants, each accented with a pair of show-stopping earrings. Above is a look that combines an animal print jacket from Meadham Kirchhoff, a metallic top from Blumarine and metallic trousers from Rochas with drop earrings from Alexis Bittar and a gold and green-stone bracelet from Kenneth Jay Lane.

In the above look from the August 2012 issue of Elle, the earrings play off the colors of the Celine fur-trimmed sweater. The drop earrings with Swarovski crystals are from Courtney Lee Collection. The silk trousers are by Celine.

The July 2012 issue of Vogue contains a fashion spread entitled "Risky Business: The eighties-influenced power wardrobe gets an ultramodern rethink—with minimalist planes of pure color and slicks of shiny leather." Pictured is an enormous pair of earrings from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci and a cuff bracelet from Yves Saint Laurent accompanying a Stella McCartney jacket and trousers, Celine leather scarf and pumps, and Tom Ford bag.

At the opposite end of the spectrum from power dressing, the September 2012 issue of Allure includes a spread of very sexy looks, including a dress by Ralph Lauren Collection at left accented with huge earrings by St. Erasmus; and a jacket by Louis Vuitton and bra by La Perla accessorized with enormous earrings from Dori Csengeri.
