$5 Million in Chanel Jewels Stolen in Paris Theft

The Landy Tunnel, the mile-long tunnel between Paris and Charles de Gaulle Airport famous for being the locale of brazen thefts, has claimed another victim: A Taiwanese art collector was robbed of $5.4 million in Chanel jewelry on Thursday.

The owner of the jewels was in a taxi in the tunnel when three thieves smashed her car window and stole her handbag containing the jewels, including a ring worth $1.8 million, the victim said.

It is unclear whether then woman was specifically targeted or if she was a random mark.

The tunnel has long been a favorite for thieves, who every now and then get quite lucky, Sky News reports. In 2014, the Saudi Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Fahd had more than $260,000 in cash and his diplomatic papers stolen in a similar theft, and in 2010, Kristina Chernovetska, the daughter of then mayor of Kiev, had $4.8 million worth of jewelry stolen in a smash-and-grab in the tunnel.
