Dinosaur Footprints Discovered in African Diamond Mine

Footprints of dinosaurs, said to be 118 million years old, have been discovered in the Catoca diamond mine in Angola.

Some 70 distinct prints were located in a small sedimentary basin in the mine. In addition to the dinosaur prints, researchers found ancient crocodile tracks, as well as a print from a raccoon-sized mammal, according to a release from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology.

For almost eight months, the Catoca Diamond Mine, the world’s fourth largest diamond mine, stopped mining to preserve the findings and make the study possible.

This find represent the first dinosaur tracks found in Angola. The discovery of the large mammalian trackmaker is most significant, the Society said, since most mammals at the time were no larger than a rat.
