Rules for Robberies

  • Never resist an armed robber. Don’t do anything to anger him. Cooperate fully with his orders, even if it means being tied up and handcuffed. “Just relax and let them take the jewelry, and they will go away,” says Bob Frank, of Jewelers’ Security Alliance. “I personally promise they will take the jewelry and leave.” Frank notes that resistance comes in many forms—it could be verbal resistance or pressing an alarm, which means police arrive before the robber leaves, leading to a potential hostage situation.

  • Don’t chase the robber after he leaves.

  • Call the police only after the robbers have left and you’ve locked the door.

  • Train your staff. “We recommend jewelers just pull their staff aside twice a year, and say, ‘Look. Here is what to do,'” Frank says. “Just doing that every few months or so could save a life.”
