Retailer Soundoff

What line of jewelry do you expect to be your best seller this holiday season and why?

Gail Friedman, owner, Sarah Leonard Fine Jewelers, Los Angeles

I think bridal will be big this year because lots of people think about getting engaged around the holidays, and then the ring counts as the holiday gift as well. Otherwise, I think the men [buying gifts] will focus on buying classics like diamond studs—more traditional jewelry than fashion. Of course, there will be some sales in sterling, like Pandora and Hot Diamonds.

Brian Frisch, owner, Tennies Jewelry, Appleton and Oshkosh, Wis.

We seem to do well with the inside-out [hoop earrings]—with diamonds on the front and the inside of the back part. We buy mountings from manufacturers and set the stones ourselves, or we buy finished jewelry from Jewelex, Unique Settings [of New York], and Levy Creations. I think [inside-out hoops] are a little more unique, especially for women who already have studs and regular hoops. They’re also available from $500–$5,000, so they cover everybody’s price range.

Cathy Calhoun, owner, Calhoun Jewelers, Royersford, Pa.

I say Hearts On Fire because it was my best seller last year, and because their designs are age-appropriate for everyone. The diamonds in their jewelry just pop, and once you get [a piece] on a gal’s hand, it’s hard to compare with anything else. She always goes back to it.

Linda and Dale Condy, co-owners, Gems of La Costa, Carlsbad, Calif.

We will be prepared to do more custom [work] because we’re not going to stock heavily in any one [finished] category. I’ll have blank settings for people who want to refresh some of their existing jewelry (based on what has been selling out of our cases since the beginning of year). People are still having [old jewelry] reset, and we have the in-house ability to put together items and set stones at the last minute.

Jonathan and Martha Hart, co-owners, Karen’s Jewelers, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

I think we’ll sell the most products in [Elle Jewelry Collection’s] silver because of the fashion, styles, and prices. I also think we’ll sell some of our designer lines that have some flash, such as [Makur Design’s] Morganite collection, which is getting some attention. We’re seeing the upper and lower end customers buy, but no middle.
