GIA Launches First Online Course

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) launched its first fully Web-based course—Jewelry Essentials—on April 16. Employees can now “attend” class at any time to review course material and practice key concepts. Jewelry Essentials is one of three courses comprising GIA’s Accredited Jewelry Professional (AJP) diploma program. The remaining two—Colored Stone Essentials and Diamond Essentials—are slated to be made available online later this year.

According to Brook Ellis, vice president of education for GIA, the online courses are aimed specifically at working sales associates who need to quickly acquire product knowledge. The courses also include sales tips.

The Jewelry Essentials course provides an introduction to fine-jewelry sales, including an overview of the precious metals commonly used in jewelry; settings and findings; and a virtual “Jewelry Gallery” of the array of styles available. Learning is enhanced by features such as quizzes, pop-up windows, and QuickTime movies.
