In rare positive words about Zimbabwe, World Diamond Council president Eli Izhakoff hailed the country’s release on bail of activist Farai Muguwu as “a welcome step” that will let the Kimberley Process get back to the “real issues.”
Izhakoff added he hopes the charges against Maguwu will be completely dropped.
Maguwu was arrested for allegedly handing state secrets to KP Monitor Abbey Chikane.
NGOs were infuriated by his arrest, and wore “Free Farai” shirts at the recent KP meeting in Jerusalem.
TThe KP will debate whether Zimbabwe can export Marange diamonds at this week’s WDC meeting in St. Petersburg.
