Alrosa exec Andrey Polyakov (pictured) is now president of the World Diamond Council.

He replaces Edward Asscher, who is stepping down after completing his two-year term.

The World Diamond Council represents the diamond industry at the Kimberley Process.

Polyakov is vice president of Alrosa and has served as the WDC’s vice president.

“The diamond’s value and worth is measured in its symbolism,” said Polyakov. It invokes a sense of permanence, obligation, passion, and loyalty. These are the same values that we as council members bring to the task at hand.”

“Much was accomplished these past two years, including the passing of the first strategic plan in the history of the WDC,” Asscher said in a statement, adding that he looks forward to focusing on his family diamond business.
