Petra Diamonds announced Tueday that a worker died on last Sunday at the company’s Koffiefontein mine in South Africa.
The incident, which occurred at approximately Sunday morning in an underground workshop, was equipment related and not because of mining operations. No other employees were injured or endangered in the incident.
Normal underground activities at Koffiefontein have been temporarily suspended while an investigation is carried out by mine management in conjunction with the South African Department of Mineral Resources. Petra Diamonds expects the mine to reopen shortly and expects no material adverse effects on production.
Before Sunday, there had not been death at a Petra Diamond mining facility since 2004.
