Winning Looks in Black & White

The selection of The Artist as best picture at this year’s Academy Awards reminds us of the stylistic effectiveness of black and white. In the world of fashion, combining black and white to create dramatic looks is a perennial favorite, and this season is no exception. In jewelry, the effect of black and white is sometimes created through the use of black plus colorless stones; other jewelry incorporates black and white elements more literally.

The March 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar devotes four individual pages to black and white looks. Advising readers how to wear black and white, the magazine states: “It might be the most tried-and-true color combination, but the sharp punch of ebony and ivory is ever modern. Turn formality on its head in graphically minded pieces. Or se it to give geometric motifs new class. The perfect accessory: an elegant touch of gold.” The touches of gold selected to illustrate the look are a gold open link necklace from Aurelie Bidermann and a classic wristwatch from Patek Philippe.

Mixes of black and gold or white and gold are featured on this second of the four fashion spreads in Harper’s Bazaar: a costume jewelry cuff bracelet from CC Skye, a ring from Elsa Peretti for Tiffany & Co., and a necklace from Aurelie Bidermann.

On the third page featuring black and white, Harper’s Bazaar incorporates white metal jewelry into the look. Featured are a necklace from Eddie Borgo and a cuff from Vince Camuto. The spread also pictures golden-accented earrings from Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci.

Finally, the March 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar highlights the black and white tuxedo-inspired look of sleeveless jackets. Advising readers how to wear these garments, the magazine states: “Give menswear a fresh spin with a satin-lapeled vest in black or white. Layer it with a silky button-up or contrasting tank top and add chunky chain-link jewelry for a touch of toughness.” The spread features a chunky necklace from David Yurman along with a similar costume jewelry version from Michael Kors.

The March 2012 issue of Allure features a silk gazar and ostrich feather peplum skirt from Jason Wu paired with a simple three-quarter sleeve tee from Calvin Klein Underwear. Swarovski crystal earrings from Rodrigo Otazu in black and clear stones pick up the high-contrast theme. The model also wears sandals from Jason Wu, a satin wristlet from Calvin Klein Collection, and a bit of netting in her hair for additional drama.

Sporty details that are “both playful and chic” are highlighted in the February 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar. Along with a Rolex watch, the article features black and white cuff bracelets from Eddie Borgo and a white metal and black collar from Giles & Brother.

The February 2012 issue of O, the Oprah Magazine highlights great buys in black and white, including resin bangles from Sobralusa.com and a “Deco-inspired” necklace from H&M.

Black and “white” watches from Piaget with a musical theme are highlighted in the February 2012 issue of Marie Claire. Two secret watches with round faces are featured on the page shown above.

A magnificent keyboard watch from Piaget also is featured in the February 2012 issue of Marie Claire, a perfect reminder of artistry achieved in black and white.
