Or, the latest in big, beautiful jewels
I feel like I’m the only person in my circle of friends who watches Saturday Night Live regularly (if you’re out there, please tell me I’m not alone!), and I always want to relive its funniest moments with someone (anyone!). Though those moments seem to be very far and few between these days, on the night of April 16, there was one gem in an otherwise stinker of an episode (I expected better from you, Julia Louis-Dreyfus!). My colleague Rob Bates wrote about the parody jewelry commercial last week, and you’ve probably seen it by now (if not, hit that link for a quick laugh). What immediately struck me about the sketch, after thinking that this is quite possibly offensive to some of my distant relatives, was, if compared to some of the recent runway jewels, the oversize look isn’t too far off. From Alexander McQueen to Naeem Khan and plenty of runway shows in between, looks like these appear to be all the rage. But whether they make it as far as the next season still remains to be witnessed (though, I do think some of the styles are pretty cool, if not particularly appropriate for the office. Or daily life in general). So, let’s make a deal. Let’s steer clear of the jewelry that will undoubedtly throw out one’s posture, change the position of the earlobes, or give someone a concussion, and go with jewelry big enough to see from across the room but not from space. I think you’ll find that this selection will remain in favor for just a bit longer (like, forever).
