Wearable Tech Designed to Combat Harassment

JWT, the marketing communications brand, has created a pendant that, when worn as a necklace or bracelet, can help women combat harassment and text an emergency contact.

The piece, called the Guardian Angel, was inspired by the work of the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE).

The sterling silver pendant features a button that, when pressed once, prompts a call to the wearer’s phone, a feature designed to give the wearer “an excuse to break away from a harasser in a shared space such as on office or a bar.” Hold the button down for three seconds, however, and device triggers an SOS text to a designated friend providing coordinates and a Google map to the wearer’s location.

“With today’s technology, nothing is impossible unless you try,” said Valerie Cheng, chief creative officer of JWT Singapore, in a statement.  “As a woman, I felt we had to give our best not just to raise awareness about the issue but to try to stop it. ”

Though the device was designed in Singapore, it can be used worldwide. The pendants are available for sale online through a stand-alone site from Singaporean retailer My Room Retail. Ten percent of each sale will go to AWARE.

A spokesperson also shared that the company is fielding offers for distribution to stores.
