Trend Watch: Shiny & Bright

Dazzlingly light-reflecting, here’s a trend that makes the wearer stand out in any crowd. Among the current choices are dresses and skirts that look like molten metal, shiny metallic leather jackets, crystal-embroidered tops, so-called “mirrored-leather” (metallic) shoes and bags, and other accessories literally covered with miniature mirrors. In jewelry, the look translates to high-polish metals and, of course, anything covered with gemstones.

The shiny style is shown for evening: “Hit the dance floor with disco-ball-inspired clothes and accessories,” April 2009 Elle; for daytime: “Metallic tones sizzle on sexy dresses, flashy skirts, and trim leather jackets,” April 2009 Allure; and even specifically for the beach: “Topping fashion’s heat index: boho-glam beachwear you’ll live in all summer. Embellish with chunky, sun-reflecting accessories,” May 2009 Marie Claire.

The shiny and bright look is a great example of a trend that can be adapted to suit a wide range of personalities as well as the gamut of events on anyone’s calendar. Going all-out in a dress completely covered with crystals requires an extroverted look-at-me style, no doubt, but almost anyone can comfortably sport shiny bracelets or bejeweled earrings.

The silver-themed pieces shown in Elle for evening have a faceted look, typically incorporating mosaics of smaller reflective components, but some of the golden jewelry seen in Allure and Marie Claire depicts the shine generated by large expanses of smooth finishes. The common theme is the light-reflecting nature of the surface of the jewelry.

It’s time to break out your shiniest pieces, your flashiest gemstones, the biggest expanses of high-polish gold or silver. Grab the spotlight. Let the sunshine in!
